Taste Test:

I first had a Boca Burger Vegan Original at a restaurant. It had such a beef-like taste and "mouthfeel" (yes, that is a real word in the food industry) that I asked the waiter three times whether there had been a mistake. It's very realistic, right down to the smoke flavor and texture. It's the king of soy burgers, in my opinion --- for those who want the taste of a real beef burger without the beef.

Boca Burger has recently been acquired by Phillip Morris, which may or may not bother you, depending on whether you're a half-full or half-empty kind of person.

Recipe Ideas:

Grill 'em up and serve them to your carnivorous friends. They won't know the difference, and will probably ask for your recipe.

Where you can find it:

Many regular grocery stores carry Boca Burgers in the frozen foods section. You can also get them at some restaurants --- Johnny Rockets and Denny's to name a few (although Gardenburger is still more common among restaurants offering vegetarian burgers.)

Can be purchased online or by mail order?

It's unclear. Boca's website asks you to contact them if you have trouble finding their products in your area, but doesn't explicitly state their availability by mail order.

Others Like This:

• Burger Nouveau (Trader Joe's) - I didn't like this one. Its attempt to simulate meat included simulated gristle. It was nasty.
• Gardenburger Hamburger Style (Gardenburger) - Haven't tried it, but am pleased with their soy chicken cutlets, so the hamburger is probably good, too. Gardenburger products are becoming increasingly available in grocery stores. The soy burger comes in four flavors: Original, Flame Grilled, Roasted Garlic, and Sauteed Onion.
• Harvest Burger (Morningstar Farms) - Morningstar Farms is one of four labels under which Kelloggs sells meat alternatives (The others are Natural Touch, Worthington, and Loma Linda). These products are widely available in most grocery stores, in the freezer section. I haven't tried the soy burgers, but all of the products I have tasted from this line have been excellent. Comes in three flavors: original, Southwestern, and Italian.
• LifeBurger (Gardenburger) - Haven't tried this one either.
• Lightburger (LightLife) - Haven't tried it, but everything else this company does is absolutely delicious, so it's only a matter of time. Lightlife's products are sometimes available in grocery stores, but are more likely to be found at a health food store or at your local Trader Joe's.
• Soy Burger (Harmony Farms) - Haven't tried it. Comes in four flavors: regular, garlic, onion, and mushroom. Available in health food stores.
